The story of wrongfully imprisoned man David Ranta, who was convicted of the murder of rabbi Chaskel Werzberger in 1991 and served over 20 years until he was released on March 21st, 2013, due to new DNA evidence proving his innocence, is coming to life in a new hip-hop oriented stage play titled, "Freedom". The scope of the play, aside from shedding light on Ranta's tragic yet triumphant story, is also to bring awareness to the high quantity of unjust incarcerations that occur in the judicial system every day.
Brooklyn rapper and Mafia member Maino has been cast to play the lead role in the play. The production for the new project released a statement regarding the play.
"Jurors go into trials thinking that if a defendant was seen committing a crime, and they confessed to doing the crime, they are guilty. However, statistics show that in 25% of the cases where the defendant was exonerated because of DNA, they had made incriminating statements, confessed, or plead guilty. Mistaken identifications account for a third of wrongful convictions. Statistics reveal innocent people get convicted every day."
