It's hard to believe the bubonic plague still exists, but an Oregon man recently contracted the horrible disease.

59-year-old Paul Gaylord decided to take in a stray cat, and when that cat bit him, he caught it. The cat had just killed a rodent, which was lodged in its throat. The rodent was most likely infected with fleas, which apparently still carry the bubonic plague.

Paul lost the fingers on both of his hands due to gangrene, and will have to learn to walk again after being on life support for almost a month. He is the 17th person in Oregon to catch the bubonic plague since 1934. He is very lucky to be alive.
