43-year-old Gary Allen Banning fell victim to a mindless mistake after he accidentally drank gasoline and then lit up a cigarette.
Banning accidentally mistook a jar sitting by a friend's sink for water, but turned out to be gasoline, which he immediately spit out. Some time later he lit up a cigarette, but didn't realize that some of the gas had spilled on his clothes earlier. Banning went up in flames upon lighting up the cigarette.
WK Preslar, investigator with the Havelock Police Department, responded to the incident, saying "It was just a freak accident."
