It's been a constant battle between everyday civilians and police these days. With the recent cease of Baltimore's chaotic rioting, it certainly appeared that things would take a turn for the better in the coming weeks. But, unfortunately, with the tragic shooting of an NYPD officer last week, it seems as if police are once again on a nationwide alert, and as usual, race is a factor in this latest case as well.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that South Carolina police shot a man who called them to report a home invasion, which was going down at his mother's home. According to ABC News, a man named Bryan Heyward, 26, called 911 on Thursday morning in Hollywood, South Carolina about armed suspects who were attempting to break into his mother's home.

Upon arrival, the two deputies who were apart of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office were told that shots had been fired, and the suspects escaped through the home's backdoor. The deputies reportedly spotted Heyward and mistook him for one of the suspects, shooting him several times.

Heyward is currently in Medical University of South Carolina's intensive care unit, where he is unable to move his lower body or speak, but ABC News claims shortly after the incident, he was able to speak to a investigator during the ride to the hospital.

Thomas Zachary Brown, 22, who was actually one of the suspects, was later arrested a couple of hours after the shooting and charged with attempted murder and burglary.

In the meantime, Heyward's family is pursuing a further and detailed investigation into the matter, mainly about concerns surrounding the deputies and their use of microphones, as well as the audio footage.
