CNN reports that Long Island man Erik Johnson was sent to the hospital after his iPhone 5C erupted in his pocket, giving him both second-degree and third-degree burns to his leg. A football sized section of skin was damaged by the faulty phone.

Johnson recalls the burning incident, "When I went to bend over, I heard a pop.I heard a sizzling, and I ended up ripping my pants off to stop it from burning me." The scarred operating engineer adds, "I was trying to get it out of my pocket. It started burning right through my pants. It was burning my leg, and I had to get my pants off somehow."

Erik's brother, who was with him, drove him to Bayonne Medical Center in New Jersey. He was later transferred via ambulance to the Burn Center at Staten Island University Hospital. Confirmation with the burn center affirms Johnson spent 10 days hospitalized receiving treatment.
