Officer Kevin McCormick is living a normal life since getting shot in the head two years ago by a fleeing suspect in Sioux City, Iowa.

According to the Sioux City Journal, the April 2013 case was recently revisited when the suspect, James and Levon Dean were sentenced for more crimes that occurred prior to the shooting. The incident happened when the brothers were fleeing from McCormick during a traffic stop. Jamal hops out the passenger side of the car and begins firing rounds at the patrol car. McCormick was shot once above his right eye.

The men remained on the run for five days until Jamal was caught by authorities roughly 105 miles by the Mexican border. Fran Ramirez, the owner of the market where the shooting took place at, says she knew the siblings from when they were just children. Surprised that they were involved, the business owner says the incident plagued the town for some time.

"Oh yes. It was two weeks before things were normal," Ramirez said. "People would come in during that first week, and people would come in and ask if he had been arrested yet. It's been a relief since they got him."

McCormick's injures required six stitches and he was back on the job in two weeks. He's only watched the dash cam footage once and says he's in shock he survived the shooting. ""I can't believe that I'm talking to you guys right now," he said during the incident. "I got a bullet in my forehead."

The Dean brothers were behind a string of grocery robberies in the area. Jamal was sentenced to 25 years for attempted murder over the shooting.
