Levar Jones of Columbia, South Carolina, was stopped for a seatbelt violation earlier this year by State Trooper Sean Groubert, and when he tried to present his identification, Jones was shot by the officer. Groubert was subsequently fired and arrested for the incident, which left Jones with a hip injury, and now the former State Trooper is set to face trial next July.

Groubert can be heard yelling at Jones, "Get out of the car! Get out of the car!," in a dash cam video, while the victim looks bewilderingly back at the officer, asking, "What did I do, sir?"

The former officer claimed that he "saw something black" in Jones' hand, and began firing at him, thinking the man had a weapon. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the incident, and found that Groubert "did without justification unlawfully shoot Levar Jones." He was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggregated nature, and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
