Maya Angelou is a writer, poet, and playwright, and is one of the most notable black female writers in the world, particularly for her memoirs. Angelou's memoirs expose the difficulties of growing up as a black woman in St Louis. This Nobel Prize nominee, was the first African-American woman admitted to the Directors Guild of America. In 2011, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom the highest civilian honour in the U.S.
