Chuck D has filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group for what is said to be under payment of royalties on digital downloads. As of 2010 digital downloads are to be treated as 'licenses'. Chuck has made the accusation that Universal instead treats them as the 'sale' of physical records which would result in the partial payment of the transaction, to the artist. The rapper is claiming that the sum of these with-holdings is within the millions.

A UMG spokesperson responded by saying, "This complaint suffers from serious flaws and weaknesses, not the least of which is that the claims asserted are not appropriate for class treatment."

According to Chuck D's lawyer, the rapper/activist will continue to 'fight the power' with this suit to help make sure all artists generate the proper payment through the legacy of their music.
