It was announced Friday morning that Maummar Gaddafi's son Mutassim, a senior army officer and security adviser, was executing following an airstrike on the convoy he and his father were riding in.

At the time, NATO was unaware that Maummar was in one of the convoys, which he and Mautassim managed to escape wounded. At least 50 Gaddafi loyalists were killed in the aerial bombardment on around 100 vehicles that were trying to escape Sirte.

It is unclear how Mautassim actually died, but he suffered gunshot wounds in the neck and stomach. Video clips show him drinking water and smoking cigarettes in blood stained clothing, but a later photo shows him dead on a hospital stretcher.
