They feel they can cope with a good man; they might even manage to be as good as he was! This gives them a false sense of oitimpsm that the Bible does not warrant. They cannot cope with God becoming flesh and dwelling amongst us, suffering and dying in our place. This does not square with their idea of what God should be like. He ought to be far removed from us entirely other.This is where the Bible explains that both can be true at the same time. Philippians 2:6-7 shows that the Son of God laid aside His majesty with the Father in heaven, in order to become a suffering servant who would take on a human nature. Those who are confused by this interpret that passage to mean the opposite! They say Jesus did not try to grasp at deity!Only the Christian Trinity doctrine faces up squarely to all the difficulties of this concept, that Jesus is both God and man, yet God the Father did not die on the cross. A main point is that only God could pay for the sins of the whole world. A human, no matter if perfect, could only substitute like for like his death could only stand in the stead of one sinner. By realising that it was God in Christ paying our penalty for our sin, we are humbled into admitting that salvation is entirely of God. We can do nothing to earn His forgiveness. Only by trusting utterly in what Jesus did can we be forgiven.
