Inflammatory stickers recently found affixed to several Austin businesses have caused confusion and outrage in the Texas capital, reports CNN. The offensive stickers proclaiming "White People Only" have been labeled an "appalling and offensive display of ignorance in our city" by Austin mayor Steve Adler.

"Our city is a place where respect for all people is a part of our spirit and soul. We will keep it that way," Adler's statement continues.

To add insult to injury, the stickers are using the city's logo in a guise to arouse the assumption that they bear some official status. On Wednesday (March 18), the mayor vehemently denied any connection between the stickers and the city of Austin claiming, "The stickers were neither produced nor knowingly displayed by the businesses and were removed by their employees when discovered this morning."

It is believed that the stickers were placed between midnight Tuesday and 7am on Wednesday. It's unclear as to the exact number of business that were vandalized, but those that were have removed the stickers.

The controversy comes during the city's annual South by Southwest festival, which runs until Sunday.
