New York's Hot 97 has a rich history within Hip Hop culture, with just about every major MC shouting out the radio station or its DJs on records over the years. Until recently, they were truly considered to be "Where Hip Hop Lives" but may have to pass the crown over to Power 105.1, as their competing station just surpassed the iconic brand in ratings.

The New York Daily News is reporting that January's Nielson ratings show Power has inched ahead of Hot 97 in overall percentage of audience, with Power pulling in 3.9% of the audience while Hot raked in just 2.8%. Power's morning show, "The Breakfast Club," also has a "big lead" over Hot 97's "Ebro in the Morning." Listeners between the ages of 25-54 in particular are choosing Power over Hot 97.

Many speculate the strength of Power's morning show crew, including Charlamagne tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy, has pulled more of Hot 97's listeners over to Power not only in the morning but retain them for midday and afternoon slots. Hot 97's recent changes in staff, including losing radio vet Angie Martinez to Power and the departure of Cipha Sounds & Mister Cee, may also play a significant role the legendary station's dip in ratings.
