Freddie Gibbs has become the latest rapper whose lyrical content has manifested into reality and nearly wound up taking his life.

After finishing up a performance at the Rough Trade record store in the popular Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, NY, Gibbs was the target of a well-thought-out assassination attempt.  After exiting the venue, Gibbs kicked back in his black GMC Denali at North 9th Street near Wythe Avenue, when an unidentified shooter ran up to his vehicle and let a firestorm of bullets rain down on his car.

The shooting happened around 1:13 a.m., but luckily Freddie made it out of that near-fatal situation without suffering so much as a scratch on his pinky toe.  Once the shots went off, Freddie's survivor instincts kicked in and he wisely made his way out of the far-side of the vehicle, opposite to where the gunman was shooting from, and retreated back to Rough Trade for refuge.  Gibbs was able to spot the gunman running away from the scene at Olympic speeds on 9th street.

While Gibbs was able to walk away free of injuries, two members from his crew, including his DJ were hit; one in the hand, and one in the leg, but neither are life-threatening wounds. The gunman was caught on surveillance cameras and police showed Freddie both video and photos of the man, and a possible accomplice working with him.  However - whether he recognized them or not - Freddie remained true to the "street code" and didn't ID either man who tried to take his life.

An investigator who reviewed the surveillance footage informed Gibbs of exactly how well this entire assassination attempt was plotted, and how many opportunities the gunman had to take his life throughout the course of the night.  Since Rough Trade doesn't have metal detectors, nor check their customers at the door for possible weapons, the shooter was able to slip right in unnoticed.  In true "007" fashion, the shooter actually tried to act as though he was down with Freddie's crew, and was successful in blending in, for he was able to camouflage himself like a chameleon all night and made everyone around him believe that he was a part of Freddie's entourage.

"He [the shooter] was standing around you guys all night," the investigator told Gibbs. "He was stalking you guys. We can tell on camera, he wanted it to look like he knew you, but it's clear he didn't. When you guys left, he was waiting for you outside.

"They don't have metal detectors, they don't use wands, nothing prevents somebody from bringing in a gun.  At one point, he [the shooter] was standing right next to you.  The opportunity was there if he wanted to shoot."

After being informed of the severity of the situation, Freddie was asked why somebody would want to kill him, to which he replied:

"They tried to kill Tupac. They tried to kill me. I'm still alive. I'm Freddie Gibbs. They tried to kill me, but I'm still alive."

No arrests have been made at this time, and Gibbs' associates are currently in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.  Since the shooting occurred, Freddie has taken to both Twitter and Instagram and spoken out on the assassination attempt.  Freddie seems to have brushed it off, and is showing the world that he is focused on standing strong despite having enemies who are ready and willing to take his life.

Gibbs recently questioned Jim Jones' alleged gang ties on Instagram, though there is no reason to suspect that beef is connected to the shooting.
