Twitter has decided to take legal action against the United States Government for restricting them from being able to respond freely to the many inquiries from users about the types of Government surveillance that is being conducted through the social media site on a regular basis.  They feel as though the laws currently set in place that could potentially result in legitimate criminal punishment if they disclose any information about the quantity and ways that the Government uses their platform to conduct security checks on Americans, is a direct violation of their First Amendment rights.

Twitter believes that it should have the ability to provide its users with detailed responses about the national security letters (NSL's) and Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court orders that they receive, but the laws set in place against them prevent them from doing so without consequence.  The social media outlet posted a lengthy blog addressing these issues.  Twitter stated:

"It's our belief that we are entitled under the First Amendment to respond to our users' concerns and to the statements of U.S. government officials by providing information about the scope of U.S. government surveillance – including what types of legal process have not been received. We should be free to do this in a meaningful way, rather than in broad, inexact ranges."

They are specifically seeking the right to post their "Transparency Report" in full to any user who wishes to gain information on the Government's interests in them.  You can check out the full statement from Twitter, here.
