Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested on Wednesday for an alleged assault on the mother of his child, and the team has since deactivated him from all activities. The Cardinals cited the "serious nature of these allegations" in a statement explaining the situation.

According to police, the incident happened on July 21, and neighbors alerted officers of noise at the residence, but no arrest was made. Dwyer's girlfriend reportedly told police that she was the only person home, while the athlete allegedly hid in the bathroom.

Sgt. Trent Crump elaborated on the situation, saying "She said she was in an argument on the phone only." He added that the following day, Dwyer allegedly snatched her phone and tried to throw it off a balcony so she couldn't call officers about another incident.

Crump said the woman moved out of state with the child, and provided text messages and photos of the assault, because she said Dwyer claimed he "was going to harm himself because of what had been going on."
