For better or worse, America loves Rihanna. Fans love her so much, in fact, that she will be the first ever American Music Awards "Icon" recipient. The first AMA Icon Award, which was created to "honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level," producer Larry Klein said in the Friday announcement. "Rihanna's iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and best-selling artists of all time."

Winners at the American Music Awards (airing live on ABC, Nov. 24) are determined entirely by fans. Rihanna is also set to perform as she joins previously announced performers Justin Timberlake, Luke Bryan, Miley Cyrus, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, One Direction, Jennifer Lopez, TLC (with a special guest), Katy Perry and Pitbull, who also hosts.

What do you think of this newly introduced "Icon" Award? Do you think Rihanna is fit to be the first ever recipient? Is she an icon?
