More tragedy was brought to the family of the late Malcolm X Thursday night, as the grandson of the influential black leader was reportedly beaten to death in Mexico City.

Malcolm Shabazz was in Mexico City to meet with a prominent California-based labor organization leader named Miguel Suarez. The organization, RUMEC, was also home to a Juan Ruiz, who described the situation.

"He's a supporter of our organization," said Ruiz. "He went to Mexico to meet with Miguel. He was murdered. He was in Mexico City and I believe they attempted to rob him and he didn't allow it, so they beat him to death and he died on his way to the hospital. This is all I can confirm, everything else is under investigation for the meantime."

Reports about what exactly killed Malcolm Shabazz differed in the initial hours after his death, but it eventually became evident that he was the victim of a violent robbery.

State Department officials have essentially ignored the death, and have declined to comment on it thus far. The story is still developing.
