Lil Debbie Gets Real About Kreayshawn's Debut Flop

Kreayshawn's debut album "Somethin' Bout Kreay" didn't take off quite like her break-out hit "Gucci Gucci," and her friend Lil Debbie seemed to have some insight on the situation.

Debbie told SOHH, "I really wasn't surprised. I think that what had happened was she came out with 'Gucci Gucci' and people really liked 'Gucci Gucci' and then I think she put out an album and she put too much random sh*t on the album. People couldn't really tell who she was. I think it was just too different.

She added, "You're going to put out 'Gucci Gucci' and that's great, and someone else is going to write it for you and it's great, that's how the music industry is but if you're going to do that and do an album, then do it with the same person that did that 'Gucci Gucci' song for you. Or do an album that's going to relate to the 'Gucci Gucci' song. I think she put 'Gucci Gucci' out and she sat around too long."

The Gucci Gucci song was very solid. Many of her other songs were very solid to, some of those didn't make the album. The issue here is branding. She didn't push her brand hard enough . The whole White Girl Mob, should have been more pushed, a few more videos early on, creating a larger fan base. This is all rap is, is branding. Some brands are easier to buy into. She should have never went to a Major Label. She should have kept the independent thing going, and when she had an established brand, she could have made some great negotiations and they would've taken her much more seriously. I think the label saw her as a bit of a gimmick. Like, as a quick cash in that *might* work, but don't spend to much. I'm betting her promotion budget was almost zero. The fact they only put her in one retailer, shows how they thought of it as a bit of gimmick. She can still weather the storm by doing shows, hopefully at least building a bit of a bank account and creating some leverage. Rebuild her brand but with the same initial energy. Maybe a few more featured's to help get some more radio spins in some markets could help to. I wasn't so surprised at the outcome and the attitude of many labels these days. Artist development and the days of big budgets are pretty much gone. Nothing but quick cash in's and solid markting budgets only for the established ones with a sales record.
