Earlier in the year, the usually exuberant pop singer Rihanna was on the sad side as she lost her grandmother, Clara Braithwaite, also known as Gran Gran Dolly, after a battle with cancer. Rihanna credits her grandmother for being the person who taught her to forgive and to remain strong as a woman. In honor of her late grandmother, Rihanna donated $1.75 Million to Barbados' Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

"This was my way of giving back to Barbados, in a form of philanthropy, by assisting the QEH in its continued modernization program," Rihanna said in a statement. "I believe that this will have a huge impact on the people of Barbados. This was all done to save lives, or at least extend them."

Following Rihanna's donation, the hospital renamed its cancer treatment center after the singer's late grandmother. The department will now be known as the "Clara Braithwaite Centre for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine".
