A six-year-old girl named Emily Whitehead is thankful to be alive today after having her leukemia cured through a new, groundbreaking treatment. Emily was treated with a disabled form of HIV to carry cancer fighting genes into her disease fighting cells.

Before the treatment, Emily had just relapsed for a second time and doctors gave her only 48 hours to live. Her parents had no other choice than to sign her up for this new clinical trial, and the results were remarkable.

Though they almost lost Emily during the procedure due to an increased level of a certain protein, a quick thinking doctor gave her a drug to ease that. From there, Emily has only gotten better. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia administered the new therapy and plans to treat 12 more patients over the next year.
