Josh Brent, defensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys, has been arrested after a fatal car accident left another Cowboys athlete, practice squad player Jerry Brown, dead. Brent has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and could face 2-20 years in prison if found guilty.
According to Irving, Texas law enforcement, the two teammates were in Brent's car and were traveling at a high rate of speed. At around 2:30 Saturday morning, Brent hit a curb which caused the vehicle to flip at least one time and skid almost 900 feet, according to Irving police spokesman John Argumaniz.
Argumaniz says 25-year-old Jerry Brown was unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead at a local hospital. He also says officers on the scene had Brent perform a field sobriety test and arrested him immediately after. The charge was upgraded to intoxication manslaughter after it was learned that Brown passed away.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a statement in regards to the tragedy.
"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."
There will be a moment of silence for Jerry Brown before the Cowboys' game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
