The accusations that have been made against Kevin Clash have proven to be just too much for the Elmo puppeteer. After weeks of attempting to put an end to the ongoing situation, the voice of Sesame Street character Elmo has decided to step down and resign from his position after 25 years.

Clash made his decision because of a scandal involving himself and a man named Sheldon Stephens, who alleges that he and Clash had a sexual relationship while he was a minor. Another young man recently made claims that he and Clash were also romantically involved. Amidst these new allegations, Clash released a statement about his decision to step down.

"I am resigning from Sesame Workshop with a very heavy heart," he said. "I have loved every day of my 28 years working for this exceptional organization. Personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work Sesame Street is doing and I cannot allow it to go on any longer. I am deeply sorry to be leaving and am looking forward to resolving these personal matters privately."

Cecil Singleton, the new accuser, says that he met Clash on a gay chatline back in 1993 and they began sleeping with one another soon after.

Sesame Workshop also noted that the accusations surrounding Kevin Clash are difficult to handle.

"Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin's personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street."
