Jeremy Lin Says Race Is Why He's So Criticized

Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin was undoubtedly the talk of the NBA last season as he hit the New York scene and quickly became a household name. His stellar play not only lifted the Knicks, but also landed him an enormous contract signing which allowed him to buy his own place and stop sleeping on his brother's couch.

Since Lin signed with the Rockets in the off-season, the hype surrounding him has died down. And even though he was the league's surprise story and proved to the world that he belongs on this level of competition, he still finds himself highly criticized by many. Jeremy himself says it has nothing to do with his game but instead cites his Asian-American background as to why people are critical of him.

"I was a little surprised, but I wasn't shocked. I honestly feel it's part of the underlying issue of race in American society ... of being an Asian-American. I haven't figured it out. I haven't wrapped my head around it. But it's something I'm thinking about."

"I've always been a target," Lin continues. "Everyone looks me and says, 'I'm not going to let that Asian kid embarrass me. I'm going to go at him.' That's how it's been my whole life. This has been different, though. Now, I was on the scouting report. People started to pay attention to what I could and couldn't do."

Lin continues to reiterate his point.

"But a target? I was used to that. I'm not saying I get everyone's best shot, but I would say people don't want to be embarrassed by me because of my skin color."
