At Least 80 Homes Destroyed in Breezy Point, Queens Blaze

A massive blaze, likely ignited by downed power lines during the height of Sandy's wrath, destroyed 80 to 100 homes in the inundated beachfront neighborhood of Breezy Point, Queens, New York.
Around 200 firefighters were able to contain the inferno, but were still putting out isolated pockets of fire more than nine hours after the fire began.
Officials said the fire was initially reported around 11 p.m. Monday in Breezy Point, a neighborhood which sits on the Rockaway peninsula which juts into the Atlantic Ocean. Chest-deep water made it extremely difficult for first responders, and firefighters had to use boats to make rescues.
One firefighter and two civilians suffered major injuries, but thankfully there were no fatalities.
