10 years ago, the music industry lost Hip Hop pioneer and Run DMC member Jam Master Jay to senseless violence. Because witnesses to the tragic crime are still not saying much about the night that Jay was gunned down in his Queens recording studio, police haven't been able to identify who the murderer is. Vincent Santangelo, the lead detective on the case, spoke to The Daily News about the matter.
"We never really had a good lead...Nobody would or nobody could tell us the who or what. We're still looking for that person," he said briefly.
Santangelo, a 22-year veteran, says those who were in the studio when Jam Master Jay was killed all provided accounts of the incident. However, the detective also mentioned that everyone stopped short of identifying the killer. Though no arrests have been made, The Daily News reports that investigators are looking at two different men as suspects.
"Investigators suspect career criminal Ronald Washington was either the lookout or the gunman. The hit was likely ordered after Mizell — who owed up to $500,000 to the IRS — refused to settle a decade-old drug debt with his old friend Curtis Scoon, the sources said."
The remaining duo of Run DMC also spoke to the news, saying it's still hard to believe that their long-time running mate and friend is gone.
"I can't believe it's been 10 years since Jay's death...That's crazy. It seems like I just saw him yesterday.
He impacted other people's lives and that's the Jay I loved and respected...But spiritually, he's always with me. His presence is felt as strongly today as it was the night he passed away."
