Tariq Trotter, widely known as Black Thought, is the lead MC for the Philadelphia based hip hop crew The Roots. He co-founded The Roots along with drummer ?uestlove (Questlove), and he, along with Malik B., are the two MCs in the very politically aware, alternative hip hop group which began as The Square Roots. They renamed themselves The Roots in time for the release of their debut album Organix back in 1993.
Black Thought and The Roots have won Grammy awards over the course of their career, and their music has oftentimes been more widely accepted and appreciated by alternative music fans rather than hard-core rap fanatics, as they're always rapping about a deeper message than many ears care to listen to.
