Kool G Rap, one of the pioneers of modern hip-hop, has a message for people who are so consumed by the stories put forth by the media.  He feels as though music specifically is a major distraction put forth upon the masses in order to blind them from the real issues going on in the world.  He singled out the hip-Hop culture as a primary example, as people often get caught up in the glamor of the "hood life" that is often portrayed in hip-hop music, and don't pay attention to the real world issues surrounding us.

He explained to The Source for the Power 30's Hip Hop 101 feature that he feels as though people need to be less occupied with music and start paying attention to the real issues.

"Times is so real right now, that in five years, music will probably be the least thing motherf***as is worried about(laughs).  Dudes better start paying attention to sh*t other than this music and I'm an artist saying this! Dudes better start stockpiling, getting their dry goods and water up.

"I am the same cat from back then, but we all have to grow, learn, and become more wise than we was yesterday. We have to take things more serious, especially when it's serious times. I'm still the same brother. I'm still New York. I still got the streets in my heart, but what kind of man would I be if I don't grow spiritually and mentally?"
