Historically Black School Bans Cornrows and Dreads

A business school dean at Hampton University in Virginia is maintaining a decade old ban on cornrows and dreadlocks, claiming the hairstyles are not "businesslike". The policy is supposed to get students into the habit of having a clean appearance to ensure job placement after school.
"We've been very successful," Hampton Business School Dead Sid Credle told ABC affiliate WVEC. "We've placed more than 99 percent of the students who have graduated from this school, this program, in corporate jobs."
Credle continued to defend the ban saying, "When was it that cornrows and dreadlocks were a part of African-American history? I mean Charles Drew didn't wear it, Muhammad Ali didn't wear it, Martin Luther King didn't wear it."
Despite backlash from students, the business school doesn't plan on making any changes. "I don't think it should matter," said dreadlocked student Uriah Bethea. "It's my life. I should be able to do whatever I want to do."
