In late June, Rodney King was found dead in his swimming pool by his fiance. The news of his untimely passing came as a shock to many, and while there were no details surrounding the cause of his death initially, the coroner's report may shine some light onto what actually happened.
According to his death report, which still lists "accidental drowning" as the cause of death, King was under the influence of a number of substances including alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and PCP. During his infamous 1991 beating, many believed Rodney to be on PCP because he demonstrated uncommon strength during the ordeal.
The coroner states in the report that King was "in a state of drug and alcohol induced delirium" at the time of his death and either fell or jumped into the swimming pool. The effects of the drugs and alcohol, combined with [King's preexisting heart condition] probably precipitated a cardiac arrhythmia and [King], thus incapacitated, was unable to save himself and drowned."
