59-year-old Walton Henry Butler of Port St. Joe, shot his 32-year-old neighbor, Everett Gant, at point blank range right outside of his apartment on Monday night, July 30th. Gant, who is African American, apparently was told by a friend that Mr. Bulter had been calling the children in their apartment complex racial slurs for days, and Gant stopped by his home to confront him about this issue.
Instead of discussing the matter like most normal people would do, Mr. Butler instead decided that the best choice of action would be to grab a loaded .22 rifle, aim it right between Mr. Gant's eyes, and pull the trigger. After shooting Gant, Mr. Butler proceeded to shut his door, call the police, continue cooking his dinner, and actually sat down to eat his meal, meanwhile Mr. Gant was lying on the ground bleeding from his head.
When the Gulf County Sheriff, Joe Nugent, arrived at Mr. Butler's apartment, he reported that Butler was acting as if nothing had happened at all, and that the police questioning him about the shooting was an inconvenience to him.
"He was brought to the investigative unit where he was interviewed and basically admitted to shooting the victim and said he shot a, just used a racial slur, and said that is what he shot and acted like it was no big deal or anything to him," Sheriff Nugent reported to WJHG news.
Luckily, Mr. Gant is expected to survive this near fatal gun shot wound and is currently recovering at the Bay Medical Center. Meanwhile, Mr. Butler is behind bars in Gulf County Jail contemplating his racist actions. He is being charged with attempted murder, as well as committing a hate crime.
