For his role in the killing of 12 people and the injuring of 58 more, James Holmes has been charged with 142 counts, which include 1st degree murder as well as attempted murder. Still donning his red-dyed hair, Holmes made an appearance in a Colorado courtroom where he was charged with 24 counts of murder - 2 for each of the 12 people he viciously killed, and 116 counts of attempted murder, 2 for each of the 58 people he wounded.
Holmes was charged with 142 counts in total, including being in possession of an explosive device and unlawful use of a deadly weapon. The 24 total counts of murder he received were split into two different aspects which will allow prosecutors to attack the 1st degree murder charges from two separate angles. They'll either argue that Holmes' actions were premeditated or that he acted with "extreme indifference to the value of human life."
According to reports, a decision on whether or not prosecutors will pursue the death penalty has not been established. Holmes is scheduled to make his next court appearance on August 9th.
