In light of the scandal that occurred at Penn State University involving Jerry Sandusky, the institution has removed the statue of legendary head football coach Joe Paterno. The statue, which was standing in front of the school's Beaver Stadium, was removed by a forklift as students watched and chanted "We are Penn State".

In a statement, Penn State president Rodney Erickson said the statue would be relocated to a safe area.

"I now believe that, contrary to is original intention, Coach Paterno's statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to hearing in our university and beyond. For that reason, I have decided that it is in the best interest of our university and public safety to remove the statue and store it in a secure location."

This decision was made after former FBI director Louis J. Freeh released a report that named Paterno as one of the school's athletic administrators who knew about Sandusky's child abuse allegations but did not inform the authorities. Joe Paterno passed away six months ago.
