[MIXTAPE REVIEW] SUGA CITY - "Leaks Of Controversy"
Rap does not surprise me anymore. I'm an ex-super fan who swears he has heard everything under the sun talked about, every rendition of a beat made, and every style of flow used. Although some inspiring attempts come about every now and then, they tend to fall on tired ears. Still every now and then I catch "That Feeling". That Feeling that although this isn't "new" and I can compare it to countless other artists and songs til my pen blacks out, there's something about the music that bonds w/ me and causes me to have emotion. Enter Suga City and their latest mixtape, "Leaks of Controversy". "Leaks of Controversy" comes off the heels of their regionally successful single, "Savoir Faire."
The two emcees, Goines & Arkansas Bo, can rap. No question. They both have distinct styles from each other that allow their personalities to be seen in each track. Goines is the more intense/no nonsense brotha, while Bo is the more charismatic and creative often layering verses with his southern croon. They both rap incredibly well with timeless flows and no tracks illustrate this better than "Cocky" and "Frank Lee" (the latter of which one wishes was an original track to bring radio back to where it needs to be). "Faith" find them strolling inwardly to bring their soul's struggles to ya'll, but then still know how to have fun on tracks like "Show Me" giving an ode to the breasts of womankind. ("Motorboating" is included.)
Funny enough, the weakest tracks on the mix-tape come from their solo endeavors. Not that that they're bad at all (b/c they both are solid tracks in their own right), but they just don't pack the same punch as when Goines and Bo are combined. The only low moment comes in an extremely homophobic skit, but unfortunately, even the creativity is seen in that.
In short, Suga City is that group to watch out for. Emcees who can actually rap and make appealing music. Just when we thought only the same old heads could do it. Here's to hoping they never lose That Feeling. As a side note, Suga City is signed to Conduit Entertainment, a label ran by the cat who won Dame Dash's Ultimate Hustler show a few years back, Brian Rikuda.
