When news broke that P. Diddy's son Justin Combs accepted a full athletic scholarship worth about $54,000 to play football at UCLA beginning this fall, most assumed that daddy Diddy bought Justin's way into the SoCal campus, let alone his spot as a Bruin.
This, according to the athletic community at UCLA, is false.
"If you're good enough to play football that you're getting recruited, it doesn't matter how much your parents are making," said several student-athletes at UCLA, some of whom are walk-ons and not on scholarships.
A junior volleyball player also mentioned that Justin "should be able to get [the scholarship] if he's qualified. If he's good enough on field... I don't think what his father does should play a role."
Justin, a 5'9" 175-pound cornerback who played for New Rochelle's Iona Prep last season was a two-star recruit who also drew attention from the likes of Illinois, Iowa, West Virginia and Virginia. He also participated in the inaugural Semper Fidelis bowl earlier this year and finished his high school career with a 3.75 GPA.
