According to reports, a 17-year-old in Washington D.C. named James Anthony Smith was gunned down for a pair of bright red Air Jordan 11’s, which were an early gift from his mom.

This past Monday, police noted that Smith was shot by a gunman near a basketball court by the Frederick Douglas Community Center in their neighborhood. According to the young man’s mother, whoever attacked her son wanted the shoes, because they left her son shoeless on a street nearby. The young man passed away under two hours after reaching the hospital.

According to police, the young man ran almost a block after he was shot for his sneakers, where he collapsed. His house was a mile away from the Frederick Douglas recreation center.

Smith’s mother told the news “He was an all-American kid. He loved his red shoes. He loved basketball. He loved his computer games. . . . I can’t believe he was killed, all over a pair of shoes.” The death of James Anthony Smith is the 110th homicide victim for D.C. this year.
