During a hearing on Friday (December 15), Donald Trump's judicial nominee, Matthew Spencer Petersen, struggled to answer basic questions about law asked by GOP Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana.

Peterson said he worked on less than five depositions and could not remember the last time he read the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Peterson currently serves as a commissioner on the Federal Election Commission and is up for a seat on the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

Seemingly realizing that he was unqualified for the position, Peterson stated during the hearing, "I understand the challenge that would be ahead of me if I were fortunate enough to become a district court judge."
