It has been reported that Miami Dolphins linebacker Rey Maualuga was arrested for battery in Miami, FL early Saturday morning. Maualuga was released by the team after his arrest.

The Dolphins signed Maualuga in late August after starting linebacker Raekwon McMillon suffered a torn ACL. The veteran linebacker, who was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Bengals, played in six games and recorded 15 tackles. Maualuga had 23 tackles for the Dolphins this season in six games, four of which he started.

Before joining the Dolphins, Maualuga was with the Cincinnati Bengals for eight seasons. The team drafted him in the second round in 2009 and released him last March. It was unclear if Maualuga had retained an attorney or what the circumstances were surrounding the arrest. Court records in Miami-Dade County show an open battery case against Maualuga, though no other information was listed about the incident Saturday.

Apparently, Maualuga was still in jail at the time of his release from the team. This makes the third off-the-field incident for a Dolphins player or coach this season. Earlier this season, the team suspended linebacker Lawrence Timmons for a game after he went AWOL the night before its season opener and fired offensive line coach Chris Foerster after a video emerged of him snorting a white powder.
