Just two days after Zimbabwe's president, Robert Mugabe, was placed on house arrest by the military, he made his first public appearance. On Friday, the 93-year-old president appeared at a university graduation to cap the graduates. Though he was allowed to attend the graduation, it is still very possible that he will be expelled.

President Mugabe has been ruling Zimbabwe since 1980 when their independence was established. But for Zimbabwe, President Mugabe’s ruling for the last 37 years hasn’t always been in the best interest of Zimbabwe.

According to the government party members, President Mugabe took the advice of “counterrevolutionaries and agents of neo-imperialism,” mistreated his vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom President Mugabe abruptly dismissed last week, and encouraged “factionalism.” Their resolution was that President Mugabe be removed and Mr. Mnangagwa be reinstated.

“Many of us had watched with pain as the party and government were being reduced to the personal property of a few infiltrators with traitorous histories and questionable commitment to the people of Zimbabwe,” the party leaders said according to the NY Times. “Clearly, the country was going down the wrong path.”

The military has been working on a civil way to have President Mugabe exit the scene. We will update as this story develops.
