“IT’S OKAY TO BE WHITE” posters have sprung up on college campuses and city streets this week, as a means to create division and cause white Americans to adopt far-right ideologies. The postings were inspired by a suggestion on online chat site 4chan. It was initially intended as an internet prank but evolved into a recruiting tool for white nationalism.

The plan was for people to print the “IT’S OKAY TO BE WHITE” signs; post them and “stand back and watch the fun.” Then the news would draw attention to the posters and white people will feel as if the media and “lefties” showed hate and disdain for white people. In the process, they will boycott the news outlets and convert them to white nationalism. This is one of many ways that the alt-right have ramped up their recruiting process in recent years.

Posters have been seen in Rocky River, Ohio; Concordia College in Minnesota; Tulane University in New Orleans; Montgomery Blair High School in Maryland, as well as The Harvard Yard and The University of Alberta in Canada. Many of the posters have been removed but the images have spread thanks to Twitter. The website Know Your Meme has even entered it into its database.
