Mass Appeal created a list of 25 rappers from the last 25 years who they feel are the most underrated in the game. They explain that they picked this list by looking at rappers who they feel are unfairly left out of "Top 5" conversations. The list is not based on a lack of accolades, fame, or money but rather respect from peers for skill level and impact to hip hop. There is a definite distinction made that "underrated" is not equivalent to "slept-on." The journalist writes: "The slept-on rapper is like the tree that falls in a forest when nobody is around to hear it: They are literally off the radar. In such cases, rap critics or the listening public simply need to wake up and smell the coffee. It is not possible to be underrated if you’re not rated at all."
