The state of Florida did a lot to prepare for the arrival of alt-right/ White nationalist leader Richard Spencer at the University of Florida, where he was scheduled to hold a lecture on Thursday, October 19. But for all of the resources that the state put into offsetting confrontation, the students proved perfectly capable of handling him all by themselves.

Spencer took to the stage at the university's Phillips Center for the Performing Arts to jeers and chants from the crowd. “Say it loud! Say it clear! Nazis are not welcome here!” echoed from those in attendance as the White supremacy espousing rabble-rouser attempted to get a word in edgewise. Spencer facilitated a Q&A with students that saw some taking shots at him, as was the case when one student asked him how he felt getting punched in the face, in reference to a random attack he fell victim to during Inauguration protests.

Although 700 tickets are reported to have been distributed for the lecture, Spencer didn't draw the numbers authorities expected him to. Judging by the turnout at alt-right rallies that have followed the events in Charlottesville, it appears that many are now hesitant to come out for what only months ago were very large gatherings. Nevertheless, hundreds filled the venue, with some carrying signs and shouts of “Go home, racist, go home!” It was enough to eventually drown Spencer out and force him off of the mic.
