The 30th anniversary of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out has arrived and has become iconic in the gaming world, as well as pop culture. Despite its status, the game’s namesake— Mike Tyson, admitted that he was not a fan of the game when it dropped for Nintendo in 1987.

While speaking to Harvey Levin of TMZ, Tyson said, “At that time when Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out came out, I wasn’t a fan of the video game. Now you can see video games all up in my room, but I wasn’t a fan at the time. I had no idea it would be such a big entity.”

Despite not really caring for the game, Tyson noted that it grew on him and he continued to play. From there, he even found a favorite character and opponent— Glass Joe. When asked why Glass Joe was his favorite character, Tyson said, “Because he was the only one I could beat.”

Levin and Tyson spoke more during the interview for the show OBJECTified, which will air on FOX this upcoming Sunday at 8 PM EST. Previously, Tyson made an appearance on The Tonight Show, where he squared off against Jimmy Fallon in a match on Punch-Out.
