As the legalization of marijuana continues to be a policy trend on the rise, the business world has steadily hashed new methods to cash in on the newest cash crop. Over the last few years, we have gradually seen several states legalize recreational marijuana, the most recent example been Las Vegas. Upon legalizing the popular plant, Sin City saw an enormous boost in revenue immediately, With the city actually running out temporarily. As the marijuana business continues to grow, the business world grows and with that the education necessary to grow a successful business.

Many universities, such as Harvard, University of Denver, Vanderbilt University and Ohio State University, have already begun to offer a variety of classes on marijuana policy and law. Despite what one may think, these classes are far from easy with courses ranging anywhere from horticulture to biochemistry and organic chemistry. The idea for a four-year program at Northern Michigan University came about when an associate chemistry professor noticed a group of students giving a series of lectures on the “chemistry of cannabis”, which sparked his interest. A representative for the school had this to say: Many of the states are legalizing different substances and they’re really looking for quality people to do the chemistry and the science,” said NMU trustee James Haveman. “And it’s the university’s responsibility to produce those kinds of students for those kinds of jobs.”

Although the university is not breaking any laws, the program has been controversial, to say the least as Michigan is still a state where marijuana is illegal. However, it is clear that the main focus of the university is preparing the students for an inevitable future and helping them learn relevant skills. Thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
