A Florida woman was dragged out of her car and beaten after fatally striking a little boy with her car Sunday afternoon.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office was called to a neighborhood in Deerfield Beach while responding to a report that a child had been hit by a car.

22-month-old Neallie Junior Saxon III was airlifted to Fort Lauderdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to a Facebook post from the sheriff's department, the toddler had been playing ball outside unsupervised when he ran into the street and was run over.

According to police, the ball several kids were playing with "rolled or was thrown out of the yard causing several children to chase it into the street."

A woman, whose identity is being withheld, was driving down the street when she struck Saxon. "The victim was shorter than the vehicle's bumper, and according to THI detectives, it is unlikely that he would have been visible from the driver's perspective," the sheriff's department wrote on Facebook.

According to police, the woman was unaware she had hit the child. When she stopped at a nearby stop sign, several people dragged her out of the car and began beating her.

The woman was treated at a nearby hospital for injuries including fractures to her face and head.

Police say they're investigating the assault.
