Athletes using their platforms to protest inequality received the backing of Michael Jordan over the weekend. During an interview with The Charlotte Observer on Sunday, September 24, the basketball legend took a stand for Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry, via a statement that seemed to also hit on the wave of NFL demonstrations that defined the day in sporting news.

Without naming names, Jordan opened up his statement by denouncing President Trump's highly scrutinized comments on Kaepernick, Curry and the general field of athletes who have taken up protests, whether during the National Anthem or against visits to meet him at the White House. “One of the fundamental rights this country is founded on was freedom of speech, and we have a long tradition of nonviolent, peaceful protest. Those who exercise the right to peacefully express themselves should not be demonized or ostracized," Jordan told the publication. “At a time of increasing divisiveness and hate in this country, we should be looking for ways to work together and support each other and not create more division," he said.

While the NBA has not formally announced any plans for a league-wide protest in the vein of NFL teams in conjunction with their personnel, Jordan appeared to give his blessing for the league's higher-ups to facilitate such demonstrations, stating: “I support Commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA, its players and all those who wish to exercise their right to free speech.”
