There has been an ongoing debate as to whether white people should be using the n-word when singing songs that prominently feature artists using the epithet. Some feel that it is the same as someone saying it maliciously if they are not black, others feel that there is no harm in simply reciting lyrics. However, a University of New Hampshire sorority is now under fire after they were recorded saying the n-word while singing Kanye West’s “Gold Digger.”

Footage of the Alpha Phi Sorority surfaced with the UNH sorority tagged in the video. The recording shows the sorority singing the lyric “she ain’t messing with no broke n****,” which is a prominent part of the hook. The video was shared by the “All Eyes of UNH” Facebook, which is run by members of the UNH whose purpose is to “expose injustices” on campus. The initial FB post said “This is a showcase of ignorance and that the Panhellenic Council should do better in combatting racism. The first step is addressing willful ignorance.” According to UNH Director of Media Relations Erika Mantz, the sorority has not been reprimanded yet. Mantz went on to say “We believe strongly in the right to free speech as recognized by the First Amendment, and we also believe in the right of every member of our community to feel safe and respected. We continue to work to improve our campus culture through education, awareness, and action.”
