It seems Martin Shkreli will no longer have the claim to being the holder of a one-of-kind exclusive Wu-Tang album after selling it on eBay.
Back in November 2015, Shkreli acquired the album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, after the legendary rap group announced they would sell the only copy to the highest bidder. Rumors swirled as to who would buy the album until Shkreli, at the time CEO of a pharmaceutical company, purchased it for $2 million.
A few weeks ago Shkreli put the album up for auction. “I decided to purchase this album as a gift to the Wu-Tang Clan for their tremendous musical output," Shkreli wrote in the auction description. "Instead I received scorn from at least one of their (least-intelligent) members, and the world at large failed to see my purpose of putting a serious value behind music. I will be curious to see if the world values music nearly as much as I have."
Following 343 bids, the album sold for a little over $1 million. However, Shkreli, who has since been sent to jail for violating bail after being convicted of charges of securities fraud, may not have received an authentic Wu-tang record. Recently, the project was called into question by both U-God and Method man's managers.
“We would never have authorized anyone to put together a project and call it a Wu-Tang Clan record without us ever looking at it, hearing it, or being in the same room together,” said U-God's manager Domingo Neris. Adding to the claims Method Man's manager, James Ellis said, "When we did the verses, it was for a Cilvaringz album. How it became a Wu-Tang album from there? We have no knowledge of that."
