Bilal shared with VladTV the moments leading up to him getting signed by Jimmy Iovine when he was running Interscope. Bilal explained that he worked on his demo with Aaron Comess of the Spin Doctors after meeting at New York's The New School and not realizing that he was a famed musician.

From there, the demo caught the eye of Erykah Badu, Questlove, and Q-Tip to name a few, and it also got him a gig singing backup for D'Angelo. It was after that that Bilal got his deal with Interscope, and while there, he collaborated with Dr. Dre in the studio.
