Trump just got a major boost to his campaign promise to keep immigrants from several Muslim-majority countries out of the United States.

On Tuesday. the Supreme Court blocked a federal appeals court ruling from last week that protected immigrants who had resettlement agreements with several resettlement organizations from being banned from travel while the legislation was reviewed.

Roughly 24,000 people could be affected by the ruling.

The ban blocks some people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen from entering the country.

"Although it may be tempting to see the order as a harbinger of how the court is likely to rule on the merits, it's better understood as a very modest procedural step to stabilize the full scope of the injunctions against the travel ban over the next four weeks," Steve Vladeck, CNN supreme court analyst and professor of law at the University of Texas Scool of Law, told the network.

The issue began last spring when the Supreme Court allowed Trump's ban to go into effect except for those with a "bona fide" relationship with the United States.

While not explaining their decision, it took five justices to decide to uphold the ban.
